Husker Nation, Volleyball Share World Record

Nebraska fans have been singing “There is No Place Like Nebraska” for 100 years … long enough that they occasionally take it upon themselves to prove it.

Routinely lauded for being some of the most knowledgeable, polite and well-traveled fans in all of college sports, Husker Nation is written into the record books along with Husker Athletics. The 60-year-plus home sellout streak for football is legendary, as is the all-sports Division 1 Academic All-American record which Nebraska has led for decades (the current Top 5 list has Stanford, Notre Dame, Penn State and Alabama following the Huskers).

As if to put an exclamation point on “No Place,” Husker fans showed up in the fall to prove that there is literally no place on the planet like Nebraska. The Husker volleyball team owns five national championships and has led the nation in average attendance in the sport since 2013, so it was no surprise that seats would be in high demand when “Volleyball Day in Nebraska” was scheduled at Memorial Stadium on what turned out to be a beautiful evening in late August.

What was a little bit of a surprise was just how many people crowded the stadium: 92,003.

A fireworks, laser and drone light show capped Volleyball Day in Nebraska.

With that attendance number, the evening’s match between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Omaha Mavericks is now not only the highest attendance for a volleyball match in NCAA history, it is also the largest attendance for a women’s athletic event in United States history, and finally, in world history, with “92,003” written across all of those record books. Nebraska would go on to record a stellar season, going undefeated at home, taking the Big Ten Conference championship, and finishing as national runner-up with a 33-2 record.

When we say it, or sing it, we mean it. There is (literally) No Place Like Nebraska.

We’re here to help you shape the future.
